The Kerala Police have opposed the anticipatory bail of noted film director and CPI(M) leader P.T. Kunhi Mohammed, a former MLA from Perambra in Kozhikode district, in a case alleging the outraging of a woman filmmaker’s modesty. Assistant Commissioner, Cantonment, Stuart Keeler told reporters that the police have moved the court for recording the complainant’s sworn statement in camera before a judicial magistrate under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The case revolves around an incident in which Mohammed allegedly invited the woman to his suite in a posh hotel to discuss the movie selection process and is accused of outraging her modesty, prompting the survivor to flee.
The timeline shows that on November 26 the woman petitioned the Chief Minister’s Office, which forwarded the complaint to the State Police Chief for further investigation. On December 2, the Cantonment police registered an FIR against Mohammed, charging offences of outraging the modesty of a woman, illegal detention, intimidation, and trespass under the BNSS. Prosecution officials informed the court that CCTV footage from the hotel’s surveillance system captured the woman entering Mohammed’s suite and leaving the premises, supporting the investigation and aiding in evidence collection.
Mohammed is a prominent figure in Kerala’s cultural and political landscape, having chaired the jury that selected Malayalam films for the ongoing 30th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). He is also a former MLA from Perambra. The police’s move to seek an in-camera statement and oppose anticipatory bail underscores ongoing scrutiny into allegations of abuse of power and misconduct by a high-profile cultural-political leader. The case is being handled by the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-III in Thiruvananthapuram, with the investigation continuing as authorities gather evidence, including CCTV material and witness statements.
