Sensex, Nifty Slide as Oil Rally, Fed Hawkish Tone Hit Markets
Stocks dip as crude oil surges and the Fed signals tighter policy, despite exit polls. Here are the three main triggers behind the fall.
The Indian stock benchmarks tumbled mid-session, with the Sensex at 76,665.05, down 831.31 points or 1.07%. The Nifty stood at 23,914.85, down 262.80 points or 1.09%. Despite exit polls suggesting consolidation for the ruling party, the day’s trade was dominated by macro triggers outside politics.
A sharp 14% rebound in crude oil prices over four sessions emerged as the biggest trigger. Brent for July delivery was around $113.63 per barrel, with ongoing gains in the prior sessions, underscoring resilient demand and supply concerns. The oil rally fed expectations of higher energy costs and broader inflation pressures.
A rising crude scene also pressured the rupee, which hit a fresh all-time low around 95.32 per dollar. Analysts linked the rupee weakness to a reflexive cycle: higher oil prices attracting FII outflows, strong dollar demand from oil importers, and limited RBI defenses amid external strains.
The hawkish tone from the US Federal Reserve added to the gloom, hinting at further policy tightening that could weigh on risk appetite for Indian equities. Heightened tensions in West Asia and the potential for disruption in the Iran Strait of Hormuz contributed to risk-off sentiment.
While exit polls signaled consolidation for the ruling party in the recent assembly elections, traders focused on the broader macro picture—oil surges, currency moves, and central-bank posture. The market’s near-term path looks set to hinge on how oil prices evolve, how the rupee manages its levels, and how the RBI responds to incoming data.
In the near term, investors may brace for volatility, with a watchful eye on USD/INR moves, oil price trajectories, and corporate earnings cues as markets navigate a period of heightened macro uncertainty.
