The agreement, brokered with the US, aimed to de-escalate tensions and prevent further undermining of the broader deal between the US and Iran to end their proxy conflict. However, the situation on the ground remains volatile. Rescue officials in Nabatieh, a city in southern Lebanon, reported at least 12 air strikes occurring since the ceasefire's supposed start at 4:00 PM local time (1:00 PM GMT).
Hezbollah had earlier killed four Israeli soldiers, prompting an immediate and forceful response from Israel. While the Israeli military confirmed a ceasefire was in effect, a spokesman later stated that forces would "continue to remove immediate threats," signaling an ambiguous interpretation of the truce. Hezbollah's Secretary General, Sheikh Naim Qassem, declared, "The project to eliminate Hezbollah has failed," without explicitly confirming adherence to the ceasefire.
The continued clashes have cast a shadow over the US-Iran deal, leading Tehran to accuse former US President Donald Trump of failing to rein in Israel. Trump himself fueled this argument by publicly criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting he has been "senselessly killing civilians" in the fight against Hezbollah.
Adding to the tensions, Israel's far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, reacted to the deaths of Israeli soldiers with inflammatory remarks, stating, "Lebanon must burn... For every tear shed by an Israeli mother, 1,000 Lebanese mothers must weep." In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israel of pursuing "permanent war," highlighting the deep-seated mistrust that threatens any attempts at peace in the region. The White House, meanwhile, insists that a ceasefire remains in place, despite the escalating violence.
