Clippers Hit with Record $30M Fine & Ballmer Suspension!

The LA Clippers have been slapped with a colossal $30 million fine by the National Basketball Association (NBA) for flagrant violations of salary rules. This landmark penalty, the largest in league history, stems from the team's efforts to funnel millions in off-court income opportunities to star player Kawhi Leonard during his acquisition.

Beyond the staggering fine, the Clippers will also forfeit five first-round draft picks between 2029 and 2033. Adding to the franchise's woes, owner Steve Ballmer has been suspended from all league and team activities for 12 months due to his involvement in matters concerning Leonard's sponsorship contracts.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver expressed his deep disappointment, stating the "severity of the penalties reflects the seriousness of the violations."

The NBA's month-long investigation uncovered a "pattern of misconduct and multiple significant rules violations" by the Clippers organization, which was noted as a prior offender of salary-cap circumvention rules. The league found the Clippers guilty of "knowingly seeking to help Mr. Leonard obtain off-court income opportunities."

Individual penalties were also handed down.

Kawhi Leonard, 35, has been fined $700,000 by the league.

Gillian Zucker, the team's president of business operations, faces a one-year suspension without pay for providing "misleading statements to investigators." Following the ruling, Leonard stated he "accepts full responsibility" for his actions and "regrets the distraction this situation has caused the fans and my family." He asserted that he entered his contract and the agreements in question in good faith, with no knowledge of any intent to violate rules.
