Verstappen Dominates Chaotic Bahrain GP in Malaysia Amid Wild Delays
Max Verstappen clinched a dramatic Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia amid torrential rain & bizarre technical glitches! Witness Red Bull's first win & major title shifts.
Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing have kicked off their season in spectacular fashion, securing their first win of the year in a dramatic and chaotic Bahrain Grand Prix, which was controversially held in Malaysia at the Sepang International Circuit. The race was far from ordinary, experiencing an hour-and-a-half delay before it even properly began.
Torrential tropical downpours initially postponed the start, followed by an unprecedented series of technical problems that saw several cars crawling during their formation laps. This created a significant headache for race organizers and the FIA in determining the correct starting grid. Once the lights finally went out, the drama continued.
Verstappen, who started on intermediate tyres along with the Mercedes duo, initially lost ground but quickly found his rhythm.
He expertly navigated the still-wet track, eventually passing Kimi Antonelli to take a dominant lead. The race took a significant turn for the title contenders when George Russell, who had been running strongly, suffered a devastating power unit failure with just five laps remaining.
This DNF has severely hampered Russell's already fading title hopes, giving Antonelli a substantial 84-point lead with only a handful of races left in the season. Adding to the spectacle, Lewis Hamilton delivered an extraordinary performance.
After a disastrous initial tyre choice of soft slicks on a soaking track pushed him to the back, Hamilton mounted an incredible comeback, fighting his way through the field to snatch third place from Red Bull's Isack Hadjar in the closing laps. This event marked Malaysia's return to the F1 calendar for the first time since 2017, with Bahrain reportedly paying to host its Grand Prix at Sepang due to ongoing unrest in the Middle East.
While Verstappen's victory was celebrated, the organizational challenges faced during the start of the race have undoubtedly raised questions for motorsport's governing body.
