Michael Carrick, manager of Manchester United, was left "massively disappointed" following his team's 1-1 draw with Tottenham at Old Trafford. The result saw United drop crucial points, especially disheartening given Tottenham played the final minutes with only ten men on the field. This latest outcome marks United's poorest start to a season since 1986, accumulating just six points from their opening six league games.
The match saw United take the lead through Bryan Mbeumo. However, the tide turned when Tottenham's Rodrigo Bentancur received a red card in the 78th minute. Despite being a man down, Spurs showed remarkable resilience.
Dominic Solanke seized the opportunity, netting an added-time equalizer that silenced the home crowd and denied United what could have been only their second league victory of the season. Reflecting on the performance, Carrick stated, "I am massively disappointed with the result, for sure. A mixed performance." He openly admitted his dissatisfaction with the current points tally, adding, "There's no hiding from that.
I think it could have been different for a couple of little things here or there, but the reality is the reality, we've got to accept it, you know. We need to put things in a direction, in a positive direction quite quickly, that's pretty plain.
When questioned if he felt let down by his players amidst United's disjointed play, Carrick maintained a supportive stance.
I don't feel let down, because you can make mistakes.
You can make mistakes, things go against you,
he explained, acknowledging that even he has made errors. He also addressed the jeers from the crowd, stating,
When things aren't quite going to plan, I understand the reaction at times. It hurts a lot.
It's not nice to go through, but sometimes you have to go through it, that's how it is." Carrick emphasized his deep care for the club, explaining his emotional reactions stemmed from a "good place." On the other side, Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi praised his team's fighting spirit. Despite Bentancur's red card for a head-butt in a melee, De Zerbi defended his player and lauded the team's character.
"I kiss Rodrigo and say thanks," De Zerbi commented, adding that the red card incident might have spurred Spurs on. "It is clear it is a mistake from Rodrigo, it is not the right reaction in football but in that moment maybe with 10 players we played with more courage, more energy and for a long time Tottenham played without this blood this character.
I am the coach and I want to see this character every game." While Tottenham remains winless this season, the draw moves them off the very bottom of the table, though they are still within the relegation zone. De Zerbi concluded, "Today has been the game where for the first time this season we showed we are a team, we played for the teammates, we played together." #ManUtd #PremierLeague #MichaelCarrick #MUNTOT
