Microsoft plans to grow its workforce with AI-powered tools, promising higher leverage from each hire as Satya Nadella reshapes recruiting using AI in Microsoft 365 and GitHub Copilot.
As the tech world reels from waves of layoffs, Microsoft is signaling a different path. CEO Satya Nadella said the company will grow its headcount again in the future, but the new hires will be empowered by AI to deliver far more. "I will say we will grow our headcount, but the way I look at it is, that headcount we grow will grow with a lot more leverage than the headcount we had pre-AI," Nadella said on a podcast hosted by Brad Gerstner, founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital, on Friday, October 31.
It's the unlearning and learning process that I think will take the next year or so, then the headcount growth will come with max leverage," Nadella added. Nadella explained that the way Microsoft hires will change because new employees will be able to work differently thanks to AI features embedded in Microsoft 365 productivity software and the GitHub Copilot coding assistant. These capabilities are powered by large language models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
The shift signals a push to combine hiring with AI tooling to boost output rather than simply adding bodies. The comments come as a wave of layoffs hits the broader tech sector, with companies such as Amazon and Salesforce trimming staff. While firms have been tight on exact reasons for cuts, executives and analysts have increasingly pointed to AI as a factor shaping headcount decisions and hiring strategies.
Nadella’s message contrasts with headlines about shrinking workforces and underscores a belief that AI can augment human work rather than replace it. Nadella framed the move in historical terms, noting that tech adoption has always required adjustment. "Right now, any planning, any execution, starts with AI" he argued, likening the current moment to past shifts when people learned to use fax machines, email, and Excel. The takeaway, he suggested, is that embracing AI is not just about tools but about rethinking workflows from the ground up. Looking ahead, Nadella said the coming year will involve an "unlearning and learning" phase as workers adapt to AI-powered processes.
Once that period passes, the company expects headcount growth to proceed with significantly greater leverage, leveraging AI to amplify the work of each new hire and existing employees alike.
