The digital ID proposal, initially put forward by his predecessor, Keir Starmer, had faced considerable public backlash. A petition launched last year against its introduction garnered an astounding 3 million signatures, clearly indicating widespread opposition. This unpopularity appears to be a key factor in the incoming Prime Minister's decision to distance his new government from the former leadership's choices.
According to a spokesperson for Burnham, the new government's immediate focus will be on "creating breathing space and delivering change people can feel in their everyday lives." They emphasized that all time and resources previously earmarked for the national ID scheme would now be channeled into areas of greater public need, such as alleviating the burden of the cost of living. The spokesperson added that the government is determined to "bring power back to communities, instead of hoarding it in Whitehall," promising growth and hope across the country.
While the decision to abandon the project is clear, the exact financial savings remain somewhat ambiguous. Starmer's government had not set a clear budget for the initiative. The Office for Budget Responsibility had previously estimated its potential cost at around £1.8 billion, though this figure was reportedly disputed by officials at the time. Nevertheless, the symbolic and practical redirection of focus is a clear statement of intent from the new leadership.
