A Bengaluru software engineer was duped of ₹48 lakh by a roadside Ayurvedic guru, whose herbal treatments allegedly caused kidney damage; an FIR has been registered.
The Bengaluru police have filed an FIR against a self-styled Ayurvedic guru and a shop owner after a city-based software engineer says he was defrauded of nearly ₹48 lakh and left with kidney damage from allegedly unsafe herbal treatments. The investigation points to a scheme staged at a roadside tent promising quick relief for sexual health issues. The accused allegedly prescribed costly medicines and coerced repeated purchases, raising threats that treatment failure could endanger the complainant’s life.
According to the complaint, the incidents began on May 3, 2025, when the victim was lured to the roadside setup with promises of fast and lasting relief. The accused allegedly sold products marketed under Devaraj Booti at ₹1.6 lakh per gram and Bhavan Booti Taila at ₹76,000 per gram, urging continued use and higher doses. The tactics reportedly included intimidation and warnings that stopping the regimen would jeopardize his health, creating a coercive environment that left the victim financially drained and unwell.
The FIR lists two accused: Vijay Guruji, described as the guru, and the owner of Vijayalaxmi Ayurvedic Shop in Yeshwantpur. The case has been registered under sections 123, 316(2), 318(4), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, with investigators pursuing the supply chain behind the medicines and seeking accountability for the alleged misrepresentation and medical harm.
Medical tests reportedly revealed kidney damage in the victim, with doctors suggesting that unsafe substances in the consumed products could be a contributing factor. The complainant is seeking redress and reimbursement for the financial loss and health complications resulting from the alleged fraud. Authorities urge anyone with similar experiences to come forward so investigations can extend to other potential victims and vendors.
