Iconic fashion designer Valentino Garavani dies at 93 in Rome, leaving behind the Valentino brand and a legacy of the signature red dress.
Valentino Garavani, the Italian fashion maestro behind the Valentino brand and the designer of the iconic signature red dress, has died at his Rome home at age 93.
The news was announced in a post from his personal Instagram and the Valentino Foundation, noting that he passed away on Jan. 19. A lying-in-state is planned at Piazza Mignanelli 23 in Rome on Jan. 21 and 22, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., allowing fans and colleagues to pay their respects.
A funeral is scheduled for Jan. 23 at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Piazza della Repubblica 8, also in Rome, at 11 a.m., continuing a week of tributes from the fashion world.
Born May 11, 1932, in Voghera, Valentino founded his namesake fashion house in Rome in 1960 and quickly became a couturier whose creations defined luxury and red-carpet glamour. He built a global empire beloved by stars such as Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman and Anne Hathaway, among others.
As designers and fans reflect on his influence, the industry remembers a life dedicated to craft, elegance and a brand that turned a bold shade of red into a symbol of timeless style.
