Zelensky Condemns "Horrific" Russian Strike on Corn Ship in Black Sea
Ukraine's President Zelensky slams a "horrific" Russian drone strike on a Turkish-owned vessel carrying corn in the Black Sea, killing its captain. Global food security at risk.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly condemned a "horrific" Russian attack on a civilian vessel carrying corn in the Black Sea. The Turkish-owned ship, identified as the "Royad Mammadov," was struck by two drones, resulting in the death of its captain and leaving another sailor unaccounted for. Eleven crew members, nationals of Azerbaijan and India, were successfully rescued.
The incident occurred approximately 30 nautical miles south of Romania's port of Sfantu Gheorghe, within Romania's exclusive economic zone. Romanian authorities launched a rescue mission after a fire erupted on board the commercial vessel.
They confirmed the rescue of eleven crew members and the identification of two deceased individuals.
Zelensky highlighted that despite repeated proposals for de-escalation and ensuring Black Sea security, Russia continues to choose "terror and sinking civilian vessels instead of normal maritime navigation." He emphasized the urgent need for international pressure to restore global food security, urging those genuinely interested to provide assistance.
This attack follows Russia's recent vow to intensify strikes across Ukraine. The Russian defense ministry had previously stated it struck two cargo vessels, although it has not commented specifically on this incident. Russia claims these actions are retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and ships.
Ukraine, however, maintains its targeting of Russian oil infrastructure is justified, as it helps finance the ongoing war.
The broader context includes increased Russian rhetoric against Western allies, with President Putin repeating threats of nuclear weapon use.
Western nations have also reported a surge in "hybrid warfare" incidents attributed to Russia, prompting concerns among leaders like German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about potential serious attacks and Germany becoming embroiled in a "shadow war" with Russia.
