The harrowing accounts of Indian tourists who survived the tragic boat accident off Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island have emerged as they returned to Hyderabad on Sunday night. Fifteen Indian lives were lost in the devastating incident that occurred on Saturday, leaving many families in grief and survivors with traumatic memories.
Mahipal Sanghvi, a resident of Vijayawada, was among the group of approximately 80 tourists who had traveled to Vietnam. Recounting the horrific scene, Sanghvi shared, "We tried administering CPR to them, but it was too late." He explained that rescue teams brought those who had fallen into the water back to shore, where fellow tourists desperately attempted to revive them before they were declared dead. Many victims were from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and their families gathered anxiously at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad to receive the returning survivors.
Another survivor, Ganesh from Hyderabad, confirmed that a significant number of tourists from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were part of the tour group. He commended the support extended by the Andhra Pradesh government in the aftermath of the tragedy. Srinivas from West Godavari district, part of a separate group of 24, narrowly escaped the fate of the capsized boat. He described waiting for his boat when the accident occurred to the vessel ahead, observing the dangerous "strong flow of water."
Eyewitnesses have pointed fingers at alleged crew negligence and significant delays in medical attention as contributing factors to the high casualty count. Survivors claimed that despite many wearing life jackets, they were trapped beneath the capsized speedboat as rough seas and gusty winds caused it to overturn within seconds. Rescue boats reportedly arrived nearly three hours later, and emergency treatment was tragically delayed.
In response to the tragedy, Vietnamese police have arrested the speedboat captain. The bodies of the 15 Indian tourists, who tragically died when the boat capsized, have been moved to Ho Chi Minh City and are in the process of being repatriated to India. This incident has cast a somber shadow over the dreams of many vacationers, turning a holiday into an unimaginable nightmare for countless families.
