The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for crucial Rajya Sabha elections on October 16. Don't miss the key dates for UP, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal bypoll!
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially unveiled the schedule for the biennial elections to 11 Rajya Sabha seats across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, along with a significant by-election for one seat in West Bengal. These elections are crucial as the six-year terms of several sitting members, including prominent figures, are set to conclude on November 25.
Ten seats from Uttar Pradesh and one from Uttarakhand will see new representatives or re-elections. Notably, Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri are among the outgoing Rajya Sabha members from Uttar Pradesh whose terms are ending.
Other BJP members from UP include Arun Singh, Geeta Shakya, Neeraj Shekhar, Brij Lal, and Seema Dwiwedi, while the BSP's Ramji Gautam and Union Minister of State Banwari Lal Verma also complete their terms. An additional seat from Uttar Pradesh, previously held by the BJP's Dinesh Sharma, has already been vacant since September 11. In Uttarakhand, BJP's Naresh Bansal's term will also conclude on the same date.
The by-election in West Bengal follows the resignation of actress Rukmini Mallik on July 16.
The candidate elected for this seat will serve the remainder of her term, which extends until April 2, 2032. According to the detailed schedule released by the ECI, the notifications for these elections will be issued on September 29.
Prospective candidates will have until October 6 to file their nominations. The scrutiny of these nominations is slated for October 7, with October 9 marked as the last day for candidates to withdraw their candidatures.
Should it be necessary, polling for these seats will take place on October 16, from 9 AM to 4 PM.
The counting of votes will commence immediately after, at 5 PM on the same day. The ECI has stipulated that the entire electoral process must be concluded by October 19, ensuring a timely transition for the incoming members.
