North Korea's Kim Yo Jong Warns Japan: New Military Options Coming!

North Korea has issued a sharp warning to Japan, with Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of leader Kim Jong Un, declaring that Pyongyang will pursue "additional military options." This strong statement, delivered on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, comes in response to what North Korea perceives as Japan's transformation into a significant military power.

Ms. Kim specifically called out Japan's recent test-firing of a U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missile from its Aegis destroyer Chokai in the Pacific. She accused Tokyo of abandoning its traditional defensive stance and developing its armed forces into a capability for pre-emptive attacks and overseas military operations. This, coupled with Japan's participation in a U.S.-led joint military drill in the Philippines in May, has evidently raised alarms in Pyongyang.

In no uncertain terms, Ms. Kim stated that North Korea would react in ways that would make Japan "regret" its actions, and feel its security "exposed to greater danger." This marks some of the most forceful rhetoric directed at Tokyo in recent months.

Adding to her condemnation, Ms. Kim also implicated the United States, suggesting Washington is enabling Japan's military expansion by supplying Tomahawk missiles, modifying vessels for their deployment, and supporting missile tests. She asserted that "The U.S. is behind such dangerous military moves of Japan."

Ms. Kim, who also heads the record-keeping department of North Korea's ruling party, expressed concern that Japan's acquisition of long-range strike capabilities effectively brings North Korea and other neighboring countries within range. While she did not elaborate on what these "additional military options" might entail, this warning is the latest in a series of North Korean criticisms against the growing security cooperation between the United States, South Korea, and Japan. The regional tensions continue to escalate.
