NHS App Gets AI Upgrade: Smarter Triage for Patients Coming Soon!
Get ready for a major tech leap in healthcare! The NHS app is integrating AI for smarter patient triage, aiming to connect you faster to the right care. Discover how this overhaul will transform services across the UK.
The National Health Service (NHS) is set to roll out a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) feature within its popular app, designed to revolutionize how patients access care. This new AI triage tool will guide individuals to the most appropriate health service, whether that's a GP appointment, a pharmacy, or an emergency department, based on their responses to tailored questions. This significant update is part of a "major overhaul of tech" aimed at transforming NHS services across the UK.
The technology is adaptive, meaning the questions it poses to patients will adjust based on their previous answers, providing a more detailed and accurate understanding of their condition. The goal is to ensure patients receive the right care from the right service at the right time, reducing unnecessary appointments and wait times.
This innovative AI feature is expected to reach over 200,000 patients in the next 12 months, with a full rollout to all NHS app users anticipated by April 2028. An initial trial conducted at a GP practice in Sussex demonstrated remarkable success, leading to a 29% reduction in the number of people queuing on the phone for an appointment. Dr. Ragu Rajan from Wealden Ridge Medical Partnership, which ran the trial, emphasized the benefits, stating, "Integrating AI triage directly into the NHS app means our patients can tell us what they need, when they need it, and be directed to the right care first time." He added that it hasn't replaced clinical judgment but has given healthcare professionals back precious time to use it more effectively.
This development aligns with the health service's broader strategy for digital transformation, backed by £10 billion in government funding allocated last year to overhaul technology and data systems. Beyond the triage tool, the NHS is also introducing AI that records conversations between patients and staff. This technology generates real-time transcriptions, significantly cutting down on note-taking time for healthcare professionals. A trial spearheaded by Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) across nine London NHS sites found that staff spent almost 25% more of their time interacting directly with patients when utilizing this transcription tool.
The AI transcription system will begin its national rollout with hospital appointments that do not require an overnight stay, initially launching at four key NHS trusts in London: St George’s, Epsom and St Helier, Croydon, and Kingston and Richmond. These advancements underscore a clear commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance efficiency, improve patient experience, and free up staff to focus more on direct patient care.
