Arunachal Pradesh has been struck by a double tragedy, with five people confirmed dead and three others missing following a devastating landslide and a horrific road accident within 36 hours. The two incidents occurred approximately 650 kilometers apart, plunging the state into mourning as rescue operations intensify.
In the Upper Subansiri district, a landslide at a road-cutting site near Nacho on Friday, August 14, 2026, buried four workers. While the body of Babul Ali was recovered, Tadu Baki, Taji Rai, and Markosh Basumatari remain missing and are presumed dead. Fire and emergency services, along with a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team, were deployed to the site, facing challenging conditions.
The second incident, a grim road accident, took place on Thursday, August 13, 2026, in Anjaw district. A light commercial pick-up truck carrying 10 people veered off the road and plunged approximately 300 feet into the Lohit River at Sarti on the Walong-Hawai Road. Six individuals were rescued, but tragically, a woman was confirmed dead, and three others are still missing in the river.
Search and rescue efforts have been comprehensive, involving local police, the Indian Army, SDRF, and dedicated local volunteers. With the SDRF's resources stretched thin, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been urgently requested to aid in the search for the missing individuals, as families anxiously await news of their loved ones amidst the ongoing calamities.
