UK & France: Bayeux Tapestry Loan Weaves New Diplomatic Ties

In a historic moment symbolizing a renewed bond between two ancient nations, King Charles III and Queen Camilla joined French President Emmanuel Macron and UK prime minister, Andy Burnham, at the British Museum in London to view the iconic Bayeux Tapestry. The loan of the nearly 1,000-year-old embroidered masterpiece, recounting the Norman conquest, has been hailed as the "best possible symbol" of the "entente amicale" (friendly understanding) between France and the United Kingdom.

During their visit, King Charles emphasized the tapestry's profound significance. "Though the tapestry recounts a conflict," he remarked,

here it is today, nearly 1,000 years later, as a precious symbol of trust, at a time when trust seems sadly to be in short supply between nations.

Speaking partly in French, the monarch highlighted that the "70 metres of memory and artistry" serve as a powerful reminder of how the two nations have been "bound together for almost a millennium." He underscored their shared commitment to defending values across the world, concluding, "May this tapestry, and the treasures that will travel in return, stand as symbols not only of our shared past, but our shared future: a future woven, as it should be, by Britain and France together." President Macron, also addressing the dignitaries in both French and English, noted that the tapestry's return had "required a little patience" since he first proposed it in 2018.

Playfully, he added,

Since the first British request dates back to 1931, I choose to regard eight years as something of a speed record.

Macron expressed his hope that with the tapestry now in Britain, the two countries could "forge a bond as close as the threads of this thousand-year-old embroidery."
