India-EU seal 'mother of all trade deals' in historic FTA
India and the EU clinch a landmark FTA, covering two billion people and 25% of global GDP, in a milestone for future trade.
This week, India and the European Union sealed the largest trade deal for both sides, covering two billion people and about 25 per cent of the world’s GDP. It marks the eighth free trade agreement India has clinched in six years. The announcement came after a summit in New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted EU leaders and set the stage for a landmark partnership.
The deal aims to deepen market access for goods and services, lower tariffs, align standards, and streamline rules of origin. In practical terms, the agreement could boost trade flows and attract investment across sectors, with particular emphasis on labor-intensive industries that India has long sought to strengthen.
Analysts say the accord sends a political signal about closer Delhi-Brussels ties at a time of shifting global trade dynamics, even as negotiators prepare to implement measures this year. For Indian exporters, European buyers, and global supply chains, the deal could open new opportunities while also requiring careful monitoring to ensure timely implementation and protection of workers' rights.
