DGCA forms panel over IndiGo chaos; passengers face mental harassment
DGCA launches a four-member inquiry into IndiGo disruptions, pledges refunds and accountability as flights were canceled nationwide.
India’s civil aviation ministry acknowledged the distress passengers faced due to IndiGo’s ongoing operational crisis, with thousands stranded as cancellations and delays mounted across airports since Tuesday. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has formed a four-member inquiry panel to identify root causes and propose safeguards to prevent similar disruptions, and it has issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers. All passengers affected by cancelled flights are expected to receive refunds, and ticket-selling limits have been imposed across carriers.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol described the situation as mental harassment and said accountability would be fixed once the committee’s report is in. He noted that some responsibilities that IndiGo was expected to fulfill were not met, and he stressed that action would follow the panel’s findings. Mohol added that a control room has been set up to monitor the situation and that refunds will be provided to all affected travelers.
IndiGo’s operations have shown signs of stabilization in recent days, with cancellations significantly reduced and network connectivity approaching full restoration. The broader debate around the crisis includes questions about pilot recruitment pace and adherence to new flight time rules, which have been in force since November. The incident has reignited discussions about how airlines manage capacity and regulatory compliance during peak travel periods.
Industry observers warn that the underlying problems may run deeper than the current disruptions, pointing to planning, resource allocation, and the pace of hiring pilots to meet regulatory requirements. While regulators press for accountability and passenger protections, travelers remain focused on refunds, clear timelines, and reliable service in the weeks ahead.
As authorities pursue accountability and travellers await resolution, the focus remains on restoring trust in air travel and ensuring that protections for passengers are upheld even amid industry-wide challenges.
