PM Modi Condemns West Asia Attacks on Energy Infra, Urges De-Escalation
India condemns attacks on energy infrastructure in West Asia and calls for de-escalation and open sea routes as Modi engages regional leaders.
India on Friday condemned attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure in West Asia, noting their adverse impact on global food, fuel and fertiliser security. The government said Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Bahrain’s King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa as part of a broader effort to engage West Asian leaders on security concerns, including safeguarding the unhindered flow of trade and energy amid the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. He also highlighted the importance of freedom of navigation and keeping shipping routes open.
The prime minister's outreach comes ahead of the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, where leaders are expected to discuss regional conflicts and global energy supplies. Modi posted that the discussion with King Hamad was fruitful and conveyed Eid greetings to the people of Bahrain. With Bahrain's airspace closed, Indians in the country are being assisted to leave via Saudi Arabia.
Earlier, Modi spoke to Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim, stressing de-escalation, dialogue and the early restoration of peace, security and stability in West Asia. He underscored the need for unhindered transit of goods and energy, including through the Strait of Hormuz.
In a separate update after talks with Macron, the two leaders agreed to continue close coordination to advance their shared interests, underscoring India’s active role in regional diplomacy and its commitment to protecting the well-being of the Indian community abroad.
Modi’s outreach also reflected ongoing discussions about ensuring the safety and security of the 10 million Indians living in the region and maintaining the unimpeded flow of trade and energy, a priority highlighted during the dialogue with multiple West Asian and international leaders.
