British Cycling Star Finlay Tarling Dies at 19 After Tragic Race Crash

British cycling has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Finlay Tarling, a highly promising 19-year-old rider, after a serious crash during the Volta a Portugal race.
The devastating incident occurred during stage eight of the prestigious race, a challenging 166.8km route from Melgaço to Fafe. Race organisers confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating that Tarling, riding for the NSN Development Team, was involved in a “serious accident” which led to the immediate neutralisation of the race.
In a profound statement, the organisers of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa expressed their deepest regrets and offered heartfelt condolences to Finlay’s family, teammates, the NSN Development Team, and all his friends and loved ones.
The NSN Development Team also released a statement, sharing their sorrow: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today. Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed. Our deepest condolences go out to Fin's parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend."
Finlay Tarling was widely recognised as a significant talent, especially in time trialling. His achievements included securing three bronze medals at the 2024 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships, highlighting his bright future in the sport. His elder brother, Josh Tarling, is also a world champion in the points race and rides for Netcompany Ineos.
Stephen Park CBE, performance director for the Great Britain Cycling Team, conveyed the collective grief: “All of us at British Cycling are heartbroken to learn of the tragic passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal. Fin was a talented rider with a fantastic future ahead of him, a loyal teammate and an all-round brilliant young man. Our deepest sympathies are with his parents and brother, Josh at this tragic time.” The cycling world now mourns the loss of a young life and a prodigious talent, taken far too soon.
