A rain-triggered landslide hit a hydro-power project site near Dangduru in Kishtwar district during the late Sunday night hours. Officials said one worker was killed and another injured as the wall of rock and soil gave way, trapping two workers. Rescue teams were pressed into action immediately.
In a separate but connected crisis, heavy snowfall at Sinthan Top forced authorities to evacuate civilians who had become stranded. By Monday, 38 vehicles carrying 235 passengers — including women and children — were brought to safety after a joint operation by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and National Highways authorities.
Troops from the White Knight Corps led the rescue under treacherous conditions, providing hot meals, drinking water and shelter as they cleared blocked roads and restored mobility for the evacuees.
Educational institutions outside municipal limits in Kishtwar and nearby Doda were closed for Monday as a precaution amid the bad weather.
Officials stressed the ongoing hazards of high-altitude passes in winter and urged travelers to monitor weather forecasts and road conditions before venturing out.
The two incidents underscore the challenges posed by severe weather in the region, and rescue teams continue to operate as conditions permit.
