Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today affirmed the Indian Navy's pivotal role not only as a fighting force but also as a crucial guardian of the nation's economic interests. Speaking in Visakhapatnam, Singh highlighted the Navy's recent actions, including its vital support during the West Asia conflict where Operation Urja Suraksha saw 18 merchant vessels, carrying cargo worth over ₹9,000 crore, safely escorted.
These remarks came as the Navy officially commissioned its latest stealth frigate, INS Mahendragiri. This advanced warship is the sixth of seven frigates being built under the ambitious ₹45,000-crore Project 17A. Its induction significantly bolsters India's presence in the Indian Ocean Region and the wider Indo-Pacific, a strategic area where various global powers are vying for influence.
Singh emphasized that a capable and responsive navy is indispensable for any nation. He stated that the Indian Navy serves as a trusted power throughout the Indo-Pacific, contributing significantly to both maritime and economic security. The minister noted that INS Mahendragiri would specifically enhance the Eastern Seaboard's capabilities, extending India's reach and consolidating its position in the region.
Named after the majestic Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, the warship symbolizes India's growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Navy chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan echoed this sentiment, describing INS Mahendragiri as a testament to India's burgeoning maritime prowess and technological independence. Its commissioning marks another proud milestone in the nation's indigenous warship construction efforts.
The P-17A project is a testament to India's "Make in India" initiative for defence. While Nilgiri, Udaygiri, Taragiri, and Mahendragiri were constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, Himgiri and Dunagiri were built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) in Kolkata. The final frigate in this series, Vindhyagiri, is also under construction at GRSE and is expected to be commissioned later this year. This collective effort reinforces India's commitment to strengthening its naval power and ensuring the security of its vital maritime interests.
