Orange Alert: Heavy Rain in Tirupati and Nellore, IMD Warns
IMD issues orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tirupati and Nellore on Nov 17 as a low-pressure area forms in the southwest Bay of Bengal.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for Tirupati and SPSR Nellore on Monday, November 17, 2025, tagging it with an orange alert due to a developing low-pressure system in the southwest Bay of Bengal. The system formed off Sri Lanka and is expected to influence weather across the region, with downpours likely to be intense in the Tirupati and Nellore districts.
An upper air cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level and is tilting southwest with height; meteorologists say it is likely to move slowly west-northwest over the next 24 hours, prolonging the heavy rain spell in the affected districts.
Beyond Tirupati and Nellore, other places in Prakasam, Annamayya and Chittoor districts may also receive heavy rainfall on Monday, while light showers are expected at one or two places in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. On Tuesday, November 18, light showers may continue in Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, with one or two areas in Tirupati, Chittoor and SPSR Nellore potentially experiencing heavy rainfall. North Coastal Andhra Pradesh is forecast to remain dry on these two days.
Separately, Tamil Nadu is bracing for intense rainfall as a new low-pressure area forms off the Sri Lankan coast. The delta districts are expected to see heavy rainfall at first, followed by the coastal belt and adjoining districts from Monday.
