Zoe Atkin has clinched bronze in the women's halfpipe in Livigno, delivering Great Britain's fifth medal of the Milan-Cortina Games and tying the team’s record for most medals at a Winter Olympics.
Eight years after watching her sister Izzy win Olympic bronze in Pyeongchang, Atkin spoke of how that moment lit a spark inside her. 'I've dreamed about this,' she said, describing the moment as a real full-circle milestone.
'She's always been my biggest inspiration, she pushed me into the sport, she was always bullying me to jump off things on the mountain,' 23-year-old Atkin said, reflecting on the road from sibling rivalry to sibling success. 'After watching her [win the medal] it's always been a huge goal for me. It's a real full-circle moment because she was here supporting me, and I was there when she won her bronze medal, so it's really special. Obviously I wanted to one-up her a bit but it's really special that we both have the bronze.'
Her final run sealed the bronze, with a score of 92.50, just short of silver. The medals tally shows GB with three golds and a silver before this result, and Atkin’s bronze adds to what’s already been a historic Games for the team.
My mum is claiming that she's the first parent to have two Olympic medallists for GB in the family, a claim that highlights the shared pride in a family that has become a symbol of GB winter sport success.
