MA Baby Attacks Congress, Defends LDF in Thrissur Press Club
CPI(M) leader M.A. Baby hits Congress on hypocrisy, fundraising transparency, and LDF record ahead of Kerala polls.
At a Meet the Press event at the Thrissur Press Club, CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing it of hypocrisy and double standards. He argued the Congress has no moral ground to allege political deals, recalling that it once aligned with the Jan Sangh against leaders like EMS Namboodiripad and AK Gopalan, and is now accusing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of striking deals. "This is sheer hypocrisy," he said, adding that campaigns must maintain political dignity.
He also targeted the fundraising surrounding rehabilitation in Wayanad, challenging the Congress to disclose its accounts: "Where is the account? Answers are missing." Baby noted that the CPI(M) has publicized its own accounts and pressed for transparency from its rivals.
On national politics, Baby said the CPI(M) had strived to keep the INDIA bloc united, seeking to avoid mutual attacks that could help the BJP. He claimed the Congress violated this understanding. Turning to the Enforcement Directorate and ongoing probes, he asserted that opponents faced "fabricated cases" while central agencies did not question Vijayan; he contrasted this with Rahul Gandhi being questioned. "Those who can read political trends will understand what happened to Congress votes when the BJP won."
He also criticized proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, saying they were stalled by Opposition protests and accusing the BJP of pursuing "anti-democratic" policies that target various sections. The exchanges underscore the high-stakes campaigning ahead of the Kerala assembly polls.
