A pall of grief has fallen over Hosur, Tamil Nadu, following the tragic death by suicide of a 20-year-old NEET aspirant, C Vetriyanantham. The incident occurred on the eve of his retest, sending shockwaves through the community and reigniting concerns about the immense pressure faced by students in India's highly competitive examination system.
Vetriyanantham, the younger son of a factory worker, had been relentlessly preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for three consecutive years. Despite his dedication, previous attempts had not yielded the desired results, leaving him under considerable stress. According to police reports, he harbored a deep-seated fear of failing yet again in the exam scheduled for today, a fear that ultimately proved too much to bear.
The heartbreaking discovery was made by his mother on Saturday when she returned home from a nearby shop. Vetriyanantham had taken the extreme step by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in their living room while his father was at work. Police later recovered a poignant suicide note from the scene. In the emotional message addressed to his family, he expressed profound love, writing, "Amma, Appa, Anna… I am sorry." He confessed, "I haven't slept properly for the past month due to the fear of the NEET exam. I am taking this extreme step out of fear that I will fail this time as well."
The Hudco Police have registered a case and initiated a thorough investigation, sending his body for post-mortem examination to Hosur Government Hospital. This tragedy in Hosur starkly underlines the urgent need for a robust support system for students navigating the arduous journey of competitive exams. The psychological toll of such high-stakes assessments often goes unaddressed, leading to devastating consequences.
Disturbingly, this is not an isolated incident. On the same day, a 19-year-old NEET aspirant was also found dead by suicide in Hyderabad's Miyapur area. While authorities investigate the exact link to the upcoming NEET re-examination, a note recovered from her residence reportedly stated that no one was responsible for her death. These twin tragedies serve as a grim reminder of the widespread anxiety and desperation gripping many young students across the nation.
