Suvendu Adhikari will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal today at 11 am, in a grand ceremony at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground. He, along with his council of ministers, is expected to take the oath as the chief minister in a ceremony that signals a new chapter for the state. Adhikari, who won the Bhabanipur seat against Mamata Banerjee by a margin of more than 15,000 votes, will helm the state for the first time in 55 years with origins in the districts rather than the capital.
Mamata Banerjee has been invited to the ceremony as per protocol, underscoring the ceremonial transition between the ruling party and the new administration. The guest list reads like a who’s who of national politics: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, top Union ministers, and around 20 chief ministers from BJP-ruled states are set to attend the swearing-in. The event marks a milestone for the BJP in Bengal, which has historically been led from Kolkata.
Ahead of the oath, Adhikari has framed the moment as a turning point focused on delivery, women’s safety, and the creation of a “Sonar Bangla.” He told party MLAs that it is time for “bhoy out, bhorsha in” (fear out, trust in), signaling a push for stronger governance and development. In addition to the ceremonial aspects, the public record notes Adhikari declared assets of ₹85.87 lakh, with no gold or cars, a disclosure that stands in contrast to Mamata Banerjee’s wealth. The historic nature of a Bengal CM with rural roots last seen in 1971 adds to the sense of a new era for the state.
