Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday (July 20, 2026) launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of being “the most anti-youth Prime Minister India has ever had.” His remarks came in strong support of student protests demanding accountability for recurring examination paper leaks and criticizing the government's handling of the education system.
Gandhi's condemnation followed police action against young protesters attempting to march towards Parliament on the opening day of the monsoon session in Delhi. He emphasized that the students, who were met with batons and detention, are not criminals but are simply demanding their legitimate rights to a fair and functioning education system.
In a video message, Mr. Gandhi highlighted that the Congress party has been raising concerns about paper leaks “not for weeks or months, but for years.” He stated, “The country has a majority of young people. Prime Minister Modi is the most anti-youth PM India has ever had. The boys and girls who are walking the streets of Delhi are not criminals. They are demanding their rights.” He further alleged that the Prime Minister wants the nation’s youth to merely “keep making reels and frying pakoras.”
Expressing disgust at the government's and police's response, Gandhi said, “Tear-gassing students, lathi-charging students is not democratic. It is not India’s way… They have legitimate demands. The Prime Minister should accept these demands and do something about it.” He stressed that students have a right to an education system that respects them, is fair, and is effective.
Later, in a social media post on X, the Opposition leader directly addressed police officers and government employees, reminding them that the right to protest is a fundamental right. He cautioned, “Power does not last forever. Accountability will certainly be enforced.” Gandhi criticized that while students raising “valid issues” were being beaten and detained, those responsible for leaking examination papers continued to go free. He concluded by asserting that “This government is not just failing the youth.”
