T.K. Govindan quits CPI(M) over Taliparamba seat, may run as Independent

Dissension has surfaced in the CPI(M) in Kannur after the Left Democratic Front announced P.K. Shyamala as its candidate in Taliparamba. Senior leader T.K. Govindan announced his decision to leave the party and contest as an Independent.

Govindan, a district secretariat member and the chairman of the Kerala State Handloom Development Corporation, said he strongly opposed the decision to field Shyamala and had conveyed his objection directly to M.V. Govindan, the state secretary, and to Shyamala’s husband. “After serving three terms as MLA, the attempt now is to give the seat to the wife for a fourth term. That effectively means the same person continuing indirectly,” he said at a press conference in Kannur.

He alleged the move stemmed from the party secretary’s inability to contest the election and added that the decision did not conform to the party’s organisational practice or “moral standards.” Govindan claimed the proposal to field Shyamala was first floated by district secretary K.K. Ragesh, along with a suggestion that T.I. Madhusoodanan should contest from Payyannur, both of which were met with strong opposition within the party secretariat. When the question of fielding a woman candidate in Taliparamba was raised, some leaders suggested N. Sukanya’s name; however, only Shyamala’s name was forwarded to the state secretariat. The district committee vote was largely against the candidature, with objections voiced by most speakers apart from a few members.

Govindan said he would not campaign under such circumstances and would instead pursue an Independent bid, signaling potential friction ahead in the lead-up to the 2026 Kerala Assembly polls.
