Fifty houses were burned in Litan village, located in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, Tuesday as clashes between Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities intensified. Security personnel have been deployed to restore calm as authorities work to stabilize the area. The internet in Ukhrul district was suspended for five days to prevent the spread of incendiary images, posts, and videos that could inflame tensions.
The latest round of violence follows a Saturday scuffle between members of the two communities, during which a man from Sakibung village, Sterling Shimray, was injured. In response, the district magistrate, Asish Das, issued a prohibition order on Sunday aimed at preventing disturbances and preserving public tranquility. Despite the order, unknown attackers torched more than 18 houses in the surrounding areas overnight, bringing the total number of burned homes to about 50 by Tuesday morning. Heavy exchanges of fire were reported in the vicinity of Litan village as security forces attempted to control the situation and deter further violence.
The home department requested the five-day internet suspension, arguing that the measure would help prevent the spread of misinformation and incendiary content. Officials said the period would allow authorities to assess the situation and take necessary steps to reestablish peace and safety for residents. Local residents have appealed for calm and humanitarian aid for those displaced or affected by the fires, while authorities promised a thorough review of the order after the suspension period ends. The incident underscores the fragile security dynamics in the region and the ongoing need for dialogue and violence-reduction efforts among communities.
