Unseasonal storms swept across Uttar Pradesh, tearing roofs, uprooting trees, and leaving a trail of casualties across Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Bhadohi, Fatehpur, Unnao, Kanpur Dehat, Chandauli, Sonbhadra and Badaun. Officials have given conflicting tallies, with initial reports of at least 56 dead and later updates suggesting the toll could be higher as rescue teams push into damaged areas.
In Bareilly, a dramatic incident captured on video showed Nanhe, a young man, clinging to a massive tin shed as violent winds lifted it nearly 50 feet off the ground before it dropped into a maize field. He suffered a fractured arm and was quickly treated, with doctors later describing him as being in good health, though some official briefings put his condition as critical with multiple injuries.
Across the state, families huddled in the aftermath as officials scrambled to start relief work. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to provide compensation to victims and set a 24-hour deadline for delivering relief to those affected by the unseasonal rain, storm and lightning strikes.
The storm system affected numerous districts with reports of loss of life, livestock, and widespread property damage. In Prayagraj and Bhadohi alone, dozens of fatalities were reported; Fatehpur, Unnao, Kanpur Dehat, Chandauli, Sonbhadra and Badaun were among the districts hit, with numbers from various reports giving varying tallies.
Residents described a sky that turned dusty and opaque, hoardings and sheds ripped from their frames, and power outages that stretched into the night as rescue teams ferried survivors to safety. As the relief drive continues, authorities urged people to stay indoors when storms threaten and to secure loose objects to prevent further damage.
