Modi Seeks Deeper India- SA Ties With Diaspora in Johannesburg
Prime Minister Modi meets Indian-origin tech entrepreneurs and community members in Johannesburg, urging closer people-to-people ties as the G20 summit unfolds.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Indian-origin tech entrepreneurs and members of the Indian community based in South Africa in Johannesburg during his G20 Leaders’ Summit visit, calling on them to deepen their engagement with India and work closely with its people.
He highlighted the diverse sectors where diaspora entrepreneurs are making an impact, including FinTech, social media platforms, agriculture, education, healthcare and medical devices, and urged ongoing collaboration that strengthens people-to-people links between the two nations.
Modi noted the over 1.7 million-strong Indian diaspora in South Africa and praised their role as a living bridge, strengthening friendship and shared values between India and South Africa. He encouraged the community to amplify Indian culture, including yoga and Ayurveda, among broader audiences in South Africa.
The Prime Minister also received a Kalash from the Chinmaya Mission, containing Shree Anna millets from India and South Africa, which will be placed in the Annapoorna Devi Temple in Durban. He also spoke with the winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz held in South Africa, underscoring the importance of heritage and education in nurturing ties.
As Modi continued his South Africa visit for the G20 Summit, the conversations highlighted the significance of sustained people-to-people engagement and cultural exchange as pillars of a broader strategic partnership between India and South Africa.
