A section of an under-construction Mumbai metro pillar collapsed around 12:20 pm on LBS Road in Mulund West, sending a cement segment onto an auto rickshaw and a car. The incident occurred near the Johnson & Johnson factory as construction proceeds on the line, and authorities say a portion of the parapet wall or girder gave way during ongoing work. The casualty count initially reported several injured, with later confirmations of one dead and three others wounded. Rescue teams including fire services, police, and medical professionals rushed to the scene and the injured were transported to nearby hospitals. The area has been cordoned off as investigators begin to piece together what went wrong.
The mayor said the parapet wall was installed just last night, and a third-party audit on the MMRDA site engineer and the concerned contractor will be conducted. In parallel, the metro project team is at the site, and work on the immediate stretch has been temporarily halted pending preliminary findings. The MMRDA has said necessary medical assistance is being provided to those injured.
Political and administrative reactions followed the collapse. Chief Minister’s party leader Devendra Fadnavis announced ex-gratia payments for the family of the deceased, while MMRD said it will impose penalties on the contractor. Aditya Thackeray criticized the state government over the incident, questioning whether a blacklist would be considered for the contractor and highlighting concerns about infrastructure safety.
The incident adds to a broader conversation about safety standards in large public works. Officials stressed that audits, safety reviews, and accountability will be prioritized as investigations proceed.
