Spanish Queer Epic 'La Bola Negra' Wins TIFF, Ignites Oscar Buzz!
“La Bola Negra,” the compelling Spanish queer epic, clinched the People’s Choice Award at TIFF, soaring into the forefront of the Oscar race. Discover why this film is making waves!
The Spanish queer epic, “La Bola Negra,” has solidified its position as a major Academy Award contender after triumphing with the coveted People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Sunday. This powerful feature delves into the intertwined lives of three gay men, resonating deeply with audiences.
Winning TIFF's top prize, voted directly by festivalgoers, is a significant indicator of future Oscar success. Historically, nearly every recipient of this award since 2012 has gone on to secure a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards, with only one exception. This makes “La Bola Negra” a film to watch closely as awards season approaches.
Helmed by the acclaimed directorial duo known as Los Javis - Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo - “La Bola Negra” had already garnered attention at the Cannes Film Festival, where it shared the Best Director award. Following its success there, Netflix acquired the film and has launched a comprehensive awards campaign, granting it the streaming service's longest theatrical run to date.
The movie is set to open in cinemas on October 16 before making its streaming debut on the platform on December 2.
Los Javis expressed their heartfelt gratitude, stating,
This is a deeply personal film but it also carries a message of the importance and necessity of expressing who you are. Knowing that audiences connected with it and made it their own is the greatest gift we could receive.
Other notable award recipients at TIFF included Peter Farrelly's comedy “I Play Rocky” as first runner-up for the main prize, and Siân Heder's drama “Being Heumann,” portraying disability rights pioneer Judy Heumann, as second runner-up. The People's Choice Award for international films went to “Elsinore,” starring Andrew Scott as actor Ian Charleson.
In the non-fiction category, “Darlene Love: I Know Where I've Been,” a portrait of the 85-year-old vocalist, secured the documentary award, while “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney” won the Midnight Madness audience award.
The 51st edition of TIFF concluded on Sunday.
