Michael Kiwanuka, the acclaimed British singer-songwriter and Mercury prize-winner, has bravely shared that he suffered a stroke a few months ago and is now embarking on a "long, tough journey" to recovery. The 39-year-old artist, known for hits like "Cold Little Heart," revealed the "quite severe" brain bleed was brought on by high blood pressure, explaining why he had to miss recent support slots with Mumford & Sons in the US.
Despite the health challenges, Kiwanuka has also announced exciting news for his fans: a new album titled "Fudge." He confirmed that the album was recorded before his stroke, showcasing his dedication to music even amidst personal struggles. He shared on Instagram, "I'm very happy to be announcing to you my new album Fudge.
I'm especially happy because the last few months I've been battling some health problems which would heavily hinder and get in the way of me making music for the foreseeable future."
The London-based singer detailed the severity of his condition, stating,
It's a long journey recovering from a stroke... the brain injury I suffered was quite severe.
He emphasized that "a lot of rehab" is still needed and isn't sure when he'll be back on the road. However, he expressed his fighting spirit, saying, "I have a long tough journey ahead, but I'm fighting to get better." He also extended his gratitude to the "incredible" NHS staff who have been caring for him.
The news has prompted an overwhelming outpouring of support from fans and fellow artists alike.
Celebrities including 6 Music presenter Lauren Laverne, singers Olivia Dean and Self Esteem, comedian Romesh Ranganathan, and Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien have all sent messages of well wishes and encouragement to the beloved musician.
Kiwanuka, who rose to prominence with his debut album "Home Again" in 2012 and won the Mercury prize in 2020 for "Love & Hate," looks forward to sharing more details about "Fudge" soon. His resilience in the face of such adversity has deeply resonated with many, and the music world eagerly awaits his full recovery and new artistic endeavors.
