Secret Service says an armed man breached Mar-a-Lago's secure perimeter near Palm Beach and was shot by agents and a sheriff deputy; Trump was not on the property.
An armed man was shot and killed after breaching the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, the private resort of former President Donald Trump, in Palm Beach, Florida, the U.S. Secret Service said on Sunday. The suspect was observed at the north gate carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can. The president was not on the property at that time, as he remained at the White House, and the first lady Melania Trump was with him there on Saturday night.
Secret Service agents, along with a Palm Beach County sheriff's deputy, opened fire after the man entered the secure grounds. The individual's name was not released. The incident follows a history of threats and security incidents involving the former president, including a July 2024 assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and a separate breach near his golf course in West Palm Beach later that year, for which a suspect was sentenced to life in prison earlier this month.
White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the incident. Mar-a-Lago is a location the former president often spends weekends, though on this occasion he was not there. The White House and Secret Service have emphasized heightened security around the property following this event.
The episode underscores ongoing security challenges surrounding high-profile political figures and the length to which authorities go to protect them, even at private clubs that are frequented by former presidents. Security experts say such breaches, while rare, trigger immediate reviews of procedures and perimeter protections at sensitive sites.
