India Among World’s Most Advanced ChatGPT Users, OpenAI Signals
New OpenAI data show Indian users pushing ChatGPT beyond casual chats into coding, data analysis, and work tasks, cementing India as a major AI hub.
India is rapidly becoming one of the most advanced user bases for ChatGPT, according to OpenAI's new public data initiative, OpenAI Signals. The findings show Indian users are not just asking for quick answers; they're coding, analyzing data, learning, and applying AI to work tasks - at rates well above global averages. With ChatGPT crossing 100 million weekly active users in India, the country is the largest market outside the US, and Codex usage for coding is growing about three times faster than the global trend.
Usage patterns are geographically concentrated in major tech hubs, with Telangana leading coding-related activity, followed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. 'AI adoption is moving faster than our ability to measure it, and that's a challenge for anyone trying to make smart decisions,' said Ronnie Chatterji, OpenAI's Chief Economist. 'Signals is our way of putting real-world evidence on the table, so India's AI debate can be grounded in facts, not hype.'
Work-related use of ChatGPT is also rising: around 35% of consumer messages in India relate to professional tasks, compared to roughly 30% globally. In the Indian workplace, users report employing ChatGPT for coding, data tasks, and other professional functions, highlighting a shift from curiosity to productivity. The data underscore India's position as a global AI growth engine, driven by strong tech ecosystems in Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, and a wave of developers, students, and professionals who are embracing AI tools as a core part of daily work.
