Punk World Mourns: Dead Boys Co-Founder Cheetah Chrome Dies at 71

Eugene Richard O'Connor, famously known as Cheetah Chrome, the co-founding guitarist of the legendary punk band Dead Boys, has passed away at the age of 71. The news was announced by the band yesterday in a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram, deeply saddening fans and fellow musicians across the globe.

The official statement from the Dead Boys described Chrome as an "incredibly beloved friend and bandmate," hailing him as "a true original, an architect of the punk rock movement." They praised his distinctive style, calling him

a one-man hurricane tearing up the musical landscape with his feral guitar riffs and manic energy.

Beyond his formidable stage presence, the band remembered him as "a really sweet guy that loved rock-roll," extending their deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans worldwide.

The cause of death has not been disclosed. Chrome's influential career began with Rocket from the Tombs before he co-founded Dead Boys with Stiv Bators and Johnny Madansky. The band quickly became a cornerstone of the burgeoning punk scene, releasing two seminal albums: 'Young, Loud and Snotty' in 1977 and 'We Have Come for Your Children' in 1978.

After their initial breakup in 1980, Dead Boys reunited for several live performances over the years, delighting fans with their raw energy. Following his time with Dead Boys, O'Connor ventured into various solo projects, lent his talents as a session musician, and toured with controversial artist GG Allin. His life and experiences were chronicled in his 2010 memoir, 'Cheetah Chrome: A Dead Boy's Tale from the Front Lines of Punk Rock'.

He was also famously portrayed by Rupert Grint in the 2013 film 'CBGB', which explored the iconic New York club scene.

Cheetah Chrome is survived by his wife, Anna O'Connor, and their 14-year-old son, Rogan, who reside in Nashville.

In a poignant note, Dead Boys had reportedly planned to reunite in 2027 to celebrate their 50th anniversary, a milestone that will now undoubtedly carry a different, more somber significance.
