The recent Chess Olympiad in Samarkand saw India's top players once again clinch medals, though they couldn't replicate the double gold glory of Budapest. Despite high expectations for retaining both open and women's crowns, India's performance underscored its strong position in the world of chess. One of the standout performers was D.
Gukesh, the World Champion. Although there were initial concerns about his form, Gukesh chose to play on the fourth board, a shift from his top-board roles in Budapest and Chennai. He delivered a brilliant performance, securing an individual silver medal and significantly contributing to his team's success.
This achievement sets a positive tone for his upcoming World title match against Javokhir Sindarov, suggesting he's in excellent form.
Equally impressive was B. Savitha Shri from Chennai, who earned an individual gold medal as a reserve player.
Remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament, Savitha proved to be a clutch player, consistently delivering wins or draws when her team needed them most. Winning eight out of ten games at an Olympiad is a remarkable feat, and this performance could mark a major turning point in her promising career.
Savitha wasn't the only Indian woman to win an individual medal; Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh, and Vantika Agrawal also excelled on their respective boards. In the open section, R.
Praggnanandhaa, Savitha's younger brother, bravely took on the challenging top board against the strongest players and secured a bronze medal.
While the Olympiad might not have been 'perfect' for him or the entire Indian contingent, it's clear that the bar for Indian chess continues to rise, pushing players to new heights. #ChessOlympiad #IndianChess #Gukesh #SavithaShri
