On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the G-20 Summit location in Johannesburg, signifying India's attendance at the high-level meeting. A cultural group welcomed Prime Minister Modi at the airport on Friday and bowed to him out of respect. His greeting set the tone for a visit that mirrors India's long-standing relationship with South Africa.
The visit is Prime Minister Modi's fourth official visit to the nation as part of this ongoing engagement, after bilateral visits in 2016 and engagements for the BRICS Summits in 2018 and 2023. His frequent visits highlight the two countries' growing cooperation. This year's G-20, which is taking place in the Global South for the fourth year in a row after Indonesia, India, and Brazil, also fits into a larger trend. The region's growing leadership role is further highlighted by South Africa's assumption of the presidency for 2025.
In addition to the multilateral setting, Prime Minister Modi met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday to start his bilateral engagements. Before the summit proceedings, India's diplomatic outreach gained momentum as a result of their conversation, which centered on cooperation and ongoing areas of engagement between their nations.
Apart from formal gatherings, Prime Minister Modi also met with a group of tech entrepreneurs from India in Johannesburg.
"Met the winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz in South Africa," he wrote on X.
"This Quiz encourages members of our diaspora to learn more about India's history, culture and more. It truly strengthens our diaspora's connect with India."
Continuing his conversations, Prime Minister Modi spoke with the CEO and chairman of Naspers about increasing investments in India's digital ecosystem, reflecting the growing global interest in India's tech sector. Prime Minister Modi posted on X about his experience at a cultural performance in Johannesburg.
"In Johannesburg, interacted with Naspers Chairman Mr. Koos Bekker and Group CEO Mr. Fabricio Bloisi. Deepening investment linkages featured prominently in the discussions. It is commendable how Naspers is actively working with our talented youth across diverse sectors."
PM Modi also shared the pictures of the interaction between Indian origin tech entrepreneurs in Johannesburg. he interacted with different sectors like FinTech, education, medical, and healthcare. Eventually, He also had an interaction with President Ramaphosa and thanked the president for the warm welcome.
Prime Minister also met Brazil's President, President Lula, and Korea President, Mr. Lee Jae-myung, claiming that,
"India and Brazil will continue to work closely to boost trade and cultural linkages for the benefit of our people."
On his X handle, he posted,
Had a wonderful meeting with President Mr. Lee Jae-myung of the Republic of Korea during the Johannesburg G20 Summit. This is our second meeting this year, indicative of the strong momentum in our Special Strategic Partnership. We exchanged perspectives to further deepen our economic and investment linkages.
