Manipur Govt Warns After Five Banned Outfits Threaten Sangai Festival Attendees

A coalition of five armed groups recently threatened punitive action against people who attended the Sangai Festival in Imphal, prompting the Manipur government to warn that anyone attempting to disrupt peace will face strict consequences. The state asserted that no individual, group, or organisation, whether proscribed or not, has the authority to issue decrees, impose punishments, or restrict lawful cultural, economic, or artistic activities in Manipur. Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel stressed that threats or intimidation aimed at endangering citizens will be prosecuted in accordance with the law, and urged the public to stand united against unlawful elements.

To prevent violence and extortion, the government has set up an anti-extortion cell under the Home Department and opened a toll-free reporting line. Informants can report threats or suspicious activity with assurance of confidentiality, and authorities urged people to promptly share credible information with the nearest police station so that swift punitive action can be taken.

Earlier, public demonstrations by residents seeking safe return home highlighted the unsettled security climate. Reports also indicated that a group associated with the five outlawed organisations sought a public apology, underscoring the volatile atmosphere surrounding post-festival peace and security efforts. The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, harmony, and public order as Manipur moves toward growth and development, calling on everyone to cooperate with law enforcement in preventing intimidation and violence.

The administration remains vigilant and emphasises unity against unlawful actions, while stressing that protecting the safety of citizens and the integrity of peaceful civic life is a shared responsibility.
