Vaughan backs England to beat India in Mumbai semifinal
Michael Vaughan predicts England's spin and pace can outshine India in the Mumbai T20 World Cup semifinal.
In the lead-up to the T20 World Cup semifinal in Mumbai, former England captain Michael Vaughan has boldly backed England to get past India. He argues England's spin attack could tilt the balance, insisting that the trio of Liam Dawson, Adil Rashid and Will Jacks has been the best in the tournament so far. He pointed out that Varun Chakravarthy has leaked runs in recent games and that England’s spin unit may well give India trouble on the big night.
Vaughan also highlighted England’s pace weapons, naming Jofra Archer, Sam Curran and Jamie Overton as the x-factor with the ball. He said the balance of quality in both bowling departments, plus a fielding side that has been exceptionally sharp, could help England prevail in Mumbai. “I just have a funny feeling England can get the job done in Mumbai,” he added, underscoring his belief that the team’s cohesion in the crucial moments could carry them through.
England have shown a knack for winning, even when the path hasn’t been smooth. They won all three of their Super Eights fixtures against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and New Zealand, though they’ve had scares along the way and dropped points at other times. Vaughan pointed to their ability to close out tight matches and execute small, percentage plays as a sign they’re ready for the pressure of a semifinal.
One caveat for England is the form of Jos Buttler, who has been dismissed for single-figure scores in his last five appearances. If Buttler can rediscover his early-season fluency, Vaughan suggested, England’s chances could rise even further. For now, the focus remains on Mumbai as England attempt to upset India and advance to the final.
