A group of JNU students gathered on Monday night inside the campus, chanting slogans directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah after the Supreme Court denied bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots case. A purported video circulating online shows the slogans, including a line that ‘India will be broken into pieces.’ JNU Students Union president Aditi Mishra said the slogans were ideological and not personal attacks, noting that protests marking the January 5, 2020 violence are a regular feature on campus.
A senior police officer said no complaint has been received so far. Delhi ministers Ashish Sood and Manjinder Singh Sirsa condemned the incident, accusing those involved of disrespecting the Constitution and promoting separatism. They argued that such rhetoric has no place in democracy and linked the protest to political patronage, pointing to Imam’s remarks about separating Northeast India and Khalid’s slogan about India being broken up.
The case remains tied to the wider Delhi riots probe, with Khalid and Imam’s bail pleas under scrutiny. The students emphasized that their actions aimed to condemn campus violence and national violence, not to target individuals, while political figures weighed in on how campus demonstrations intersect with national politics.
