A shocking incident unfolded in the heart of Times Square, Manhattan, on Monday afternoon, as a woman allegedly fatally stabbed one person and injured another before being shot dead by police. The bustling tourist hub, typically vibrant with activity, turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy as New Yorkers commuted home.
Police identified the assailant as Pamela Cisneros, a 49-year-old Queens resident. Armed with two knives, Cisneros launched a seemingly random and unprovoked attack just before 4:30 p.m. ET. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that Cisneros first stabbed a 68-year-old man who had just exited a subway station with his wife, striking him in the abdomen.
Moments later, she approached a 32-year-old woman and stabbed her in the abdomen as well.
Both incidents occurred within approximately 20 seconds.
Witnesses quickly alerted NYPD officers who converged on the scene. For four tense minutes, officers engaged with Cisneros, repeatedly demanding she drop the two knives she was still brandishing. Commissioner Tisch reported that Cisneros refused to comply, reportedly telling officers, "I'm not dropping anything, I would rather kill both of you."
As Cisneros continued to wave the knives and advance towards the officers, they deployed tasers in an attempt to subdue her. However, the less-lethal force proved ineffective, and she persisted in moving menacingly toward them.
Faced with the immediate threat, two officers discharged their firearms, striking Cisneros.
She was rushed to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Tragically, the woman Cisneros allegedly stabbed also died, while the 68-year-old man remains in critical condition.
