Activist Sonam Wangchuk Discharged, Heads to Rajghat Before Ladakh

Prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk is set to be discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Monday, July 27, 2026. Following his discharge, Mr. Wangchuk plans to visit Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi before making his way back to Ladakh. He is expected to be discharged around 11:30 a.m.
Mr. Wangchuk has been recovering in the hospital after ending his 26-day fast late on Thursday night, July 24, 2026. His indefinite hunger strike began on June 28 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, where he joined students protesting alleged irregularities, including a question paper leak, in the recently held NEET medical entrance examination. This isn't his first visit to Rajghat during this period, as he also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi there on June 28, just before launching his fast.
The activist was forcibly shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18, where he expressed feeling as though he was being held in detention. Following an order from the Delhi High Court, Mr. Wangchuk was later transferred to Medanta Hospital for continued care.
His personal protest was part of a larger, 36-day agitation led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which had begun on June 20. The extensive protest concluded on Saturday, July 25, 2026, culminating in the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as the Union Education Minister. Mr. Wangchuk's unwavering commitment throughout this period has drawn significant attention to the issues raised.
