BBC Radio 1 is undergoing a significant schedule shake-up, announcing the departure of six beloved presenters and welcoming several new talents to its airwaves. After seven years, popular duo Rickie Haywood-Williams and Melvin Odoom are among those saying goodbye to their mid-morning show, though their co-host Charlie Hedges will remain with the station.
Joining Rickie and Melvin in their departure are Dean McCullough, Nat O’Leary, James Cusack, and Swarzy. A statement from Radio 1 extended thanks to the departing presenters for their "passion, creativity and dedication," wishing them well in their future endeavors. Melvin Odoom took to Instagram to express his pride, calling his time at Radio 1 "a dream" and thanking listeners. Haywood-Williams echoed this sentiment, calling listeners "the best part of the job."
As some familiar voices exit, new energy is set to infuse the station. Five new permanent hosts are joining the Radio 1 family, including 'I’m A Celeb’s' GK Barry, social media personality Charley Marlowe, broadcasters Mylo & Rosie, and former Absolute Radio host Emil Franchi. Mylo and Rosie will be taking over the weekday Early Breakfast show, while Jeremiah Asiamah will step into the coveted Live Lounge alongside Charlie Hedges, replacing Rickie and Melvin.
The mid-morning slot from Friday to Sunday will now be hosted by existing presenter Vicky Hawkesworth and Charley Marlowe. Emil Franchi is set to replace James Cusack as the new host of Weekend Breakfast. These changes mark a new chapter for BBC Radio 1, aiming to keep its programming fresh and engaging for its audience.
