Shamanur Shivashankarappa laid to rest in Davanagere after six terms
Veteran Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa, 94, cremated in Davanagere as leaders pay respects and recall a long public career.
Shamanur Shivashankarappa, a veteran Congress leader and one of Karnataka’s longest-serving legislators, was cremated on Monday in Davanagere. He died on Sunday evening at the age of 94 after battling age-related ailments. The final rites were held at the Kaleshwara Rice Mill cremation ground, in keeping with Veerashaiva Lingayat customs. A 15-kilometre procession from his residence to the cremation site culminated at around 6 pm, with a gun salute for the departed leader and the tricolour draped over his mortal remains. Chief minister Siddaramaiah, deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge joined others in paying their respects, alongside spiritual leaders and dignitaries.
