In a major development, Hamza Burhan, a top commander of the Al Badr terror group and a key figure behind the tragic 2019 Pulwama attack, has been killed. Reports indicate that Burhan, whose real name was Arjumand Gulzar Dar, was targeted by unknown gunmen on Thursday morning in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The incident took place as Burhan was leaving a private college in the Gojra area, where he had been living undercover as the institution's principal. The attackers reportedly fired several shots at close range, with Burhan sustaining three bullet wounds to the head. While he was initially rushed to a nearby hospital and placed on a ventilator, sources have since confirmed his death.
Hamza Burhan had a long history of involvement in militancy. Originally from Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir, he moved to Pakistan years ago on valid documents before joining the Al Badr outfit. By April 2022, the Indian government had officially designated him a terrorist for his role in coordinating various attacks, including the Pulwama bombing that killed over 40 security personnel. Since moving across the border, he was allegedly active in recruiting youth and funding terror activities.
Local authorities in Muzaffarabad claim to have arrested a suspect fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, though this incident follows a pattern of unidentified gunmen targeting high-profile militants in the region recently.
