IAS Officer's Daughter Found Dead; Parents, Husband Clash Over Harassment

Hyderabad: A 25-year-old woman, daughter of a senior Indian Administrative Service officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, was found dead at her parents' home in Guntur district on Sunday night, police said. The body was recovered from the bathroom around midnight, the Mangalagiri police said, and shifted to AIIMS, Mangalagiri for post-mortem. A case of suicide under Section 80, which deals with dowry deaths, has been registered, according to investigators.

Her parents allege that she was harassed by her in-laws for dowry, while her husband contends that her family was pressuring her to desert him and marry another man. The couple, both from the same village in Nandyal district, had a relationship for two years before marrying at the Mahanandi temple on March 5, with the marriage registered on March 7. Within three months of the wedding, the deceased allegedly called her parents and said she was facing severe harassment from her husband, according to the DSP.

Following those distress calls, her parents brought her back to their home two months ago with assistance from local police, and she had been living there since. The father alleges that the husband cheated by promising a job and coerced his daughter into a registered marriage. Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances and to ascertain the reasons behind the tragedy, amid competing claims from the family members.

The case has shone a spotlight on dowry-related violence and the need for thorough, impartial inquiries into such deaths, as authorities balance competing narratives while the investigation proceeds.
